This report is a result of the community-based research project co-developed by Dr. Christine Mayor (Inner City Social Work, University of Manitoba) and Dr. Julie Chamberlain (Urban and Inner-City Studies, University of Winnipeg), with Zoongizi Ode and Persons Community Solutions (PCS). The findings show how wâhkôhtowin is put into practice in different public spaces, prioritizing safety of people over the securitization of buildings.
The Community Safety Host Program is an Indigenous-led, people-centred alternative to security guards. CSHs work in places of access across the city, including libraries, shelters, and other service centres. Their work is guided by wâhkôhtowin, a Cree and Métis worldview that emphasizes that we live in a universe defined by relatedness, and that we have responsibilities to respect and care for one another.
